Opinião / Review - "The Elect", Elle Todd

Allison Noble is presented to us on the night of her sixteenth birthday when she and her best friend, Delaney, invade the school to put into practice a plan of revenge against the popular Rebecca. In this nocturnal adventure, the two friends are surprised by Jeremy and the Baileys cousins, Ryan and Nate, doing pyrotechnic tricks, in other words, playing with fire in the basement of the school. Ally, who always considered the Baileys as somewhat strange, too gorgeous and too friendly, sees herself involved, largely due to the insatiable curiosity of Delaney, in a dangerous investigation in order to discover what this sinister trio of boys hides.

Ally and Lane do everything in their power to spy on them and find out if they suspect that they were also at the school that night. When the Baileys and Jeremy start acting like close friends to the girls, for no apparent reason, Ally becomes increasingly reticent and fearful. Strange sensations take over her when they are close by, there is an aura of mystery that surrounds them and also involves us in the first half of this book. That mystery is completely spoiled by the synopsis which unfortunately reveals more than necessary. Still, I set myself to get to know the characters and quite enjoyed his company throughout the reading.

Ally is the typical girl who does not feel particularly beautiful, but she also makes no effort to be, she’s smart, responsible, shy, kind of antisocial, and not stupidly friendly, with a sense of humor that often flees to the sarcastic, she doesn’t care much about the rest of the world, she has Delaney's friendship and that is enough. She’s so direct and genuine that she’s a terrible liar! I just loved Ally, perhaps becauyse I identify myself in some aspects of her personality.

Also liked Ryan who is so pretty, polite, gentle and smart. Since nobody is perfect, he’s Rebecca’s boyfriend. Nate is also someone who is hard not to like, he’s fun and with his mischievous smile he'll charm spreading around.

I appreciated the dialogues between the characters, well constructed, fluid and not forced at all. I considered the romantic part very proper, firmly attached in the rest, without major excesses, and it still managed to get some smiles out of me, because of the adorable performance of the characters involved.

What I did not like in this book was the lack of action, there are too many pages in which we see the time pass and these pages could have been better used, for example, to extend the final part, which was very quick and it should have started earlier, or to develop some concepts created by the author. The narrator being too partial made me wonder if it would work better writing in the first person. I also don't approve of the pop star cliché, the platinum blonde with followers with empty minds, it annoys me! It's a stereotype I no longer tolerated as a teenager, and now it is simply unbearable! First, because I see no great prevalence of this type of people, second, because a more polished appearance does not make a person automatically an exponent of futility or possessor of an exaggerated vanity, much less gives her the choice of only having false friendships, I really think very unfortunate adjectives were used by the author to refer to Rebecca's friends: blind monkeys.

The end of The Elect had a pace that satisfied me. After an entire fifty pages that almost killed me with boredom, I got stuck to the emotion of the last moments and for sure I will read The Vanguard because I need many answers and mainly I need to know what happened to Allison.

I cannot help saying that I loved the cover, I read the ebook version, which was kindly provided by the author, but I am sure that The Elect and the next volume of this series, The Vanguard, would be very comfortable on my bookshelf and certainly beautify it.

Having read the synopsis of this book was what most hurt the pace of reading, because it destroyed the well conceived mystery in the first half of the book. Therefore, unlike the usual posts, I put the synopsis after the review, but I advise strongly not to read it!

Sinopse/Synopsis

"Allison Noble never liked the Baileys. They were too good-looking, too popular, too charming to be legitimate. For most of their high school career she avoided the pair, convinced their outward affability was just a ruse to disguise their true character. Okay, yeah, she’s a little neurotic. Even so, she never suspected that what they were hiding was dangerous. It never occurred to her that they might have abilities based more in fiction than reality. Why would it? People can’t produce fire with their bare hands. There are no such things as mind control and telekinesis. Except, she discovers, there are.

The Baileys are Elect, gifted with supernatural powers Allison is able to not only sense, but use herself. In the history of the Elect, there has never been one such as she, and with good reason. Because she wasn’t born to such power, she has a difficult time controlling it. Accidents happen, putting them all at risk. As others draw near—some who wish to protect her, others who want to destroy her—she is forced to uncover the secrets of her past, and face the consequences of being what her own kind refers to as an abomination."
